Although a wealth of information is available on the induction of one or several drought‐related responses in different species, little is known of how their timing, modulation and crucially integration influence drought tolerance. Based upon metabolomic changes in oat (Avena sativa L.), we have defined key processes involved in drought tolerance. During a time course of increasing water deficit, metabolites from leaf samples were profiled using direct infusion–electrospray mass spectroscopy (DI‐ESI‐MS) and high‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) ESI‐MS/MS and analysed using principal component analysis (PCA) and discriminant function analysis (DFA). The involvement of metabolite pathways was confirmed through targeted assays of key metabolites and physiological experiments. We demonstrate an early accumulation of salicylic acid (SA) influencing stomatal opening, photorespiration and antioxidant defences before any change in the relative water content. These changes are likely to maintain plant water status, with any photoinhibitory effect being counteracted by an efficient antioxidant capacity, thereby representing an integrated mechanism of drought tolerance in oats. We also discuss these changes in relation to those engaged at later points, consequence of the different water status in susceptible and resistant genotypes.  相似文献

Nuclear DNA contents were determined by flow cytometry for 20 populations of the perennial C4 shrub Atriplex halimus L. (Chenopodiaceae) originating from the Mediterranean basin and Fuerteventura (Canary Islands). Two populations were also analysed for chromosome number: one (from Ibiza, Spain), with a 2C nuclear DNA content of 2.40 pg, was shown to be diploid (2 n  = 2 x  = 18), whilst the other (from Sicily, Italy), with 5.11 pg, was tetraploid (2 n  = 2 x  = 36). With respect to nuclear DNA content, two groups of populations were detected, diploids with 2.40–2.44 pg and tetraploids with 4.77–5.13 pg. The diploid populations were mainly from the western Mediterranean (Spain and France) and Fuerteventura, whereas tetraploids were generally, but not exclusively, from more arid areas in North Africa and the eastern Mediterranean. In general, the diploid and tetraploid populations corresponded to the subspecies halimus and schweinfurthii , respectively. For certain populations having morphologies intermediate between those considered typical of these two subspecies, nuclear DNA contents showed them to be tetraploid. We reviewed the effects of elevated ozone (O3), alone and in combination with elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) on primary and secondary metabolites of trees and performance of insect herbivores by means of meta‐analysis. Our database consisted of 63 studies conducted on 22 species of trees and published between 1990 and 2005. Ozone alone had no overall effect on concentrations of carbohydrates or nutrients, whereas in combination with CO2, elevated O3 reduced nutrient concentrations and increased carbohydrate concentrations. In contrast to primary metabolites, concentrations of phenolics and terpenes were significantly increased by 16% and 8%, respectively, in response to elevated O3. Effects of ozone in combination with elevated CO2 were weaker than those of ozone alone on phenolics, but stronger than those of ozone alone on terpenes. The magnitude of secondary metabolite responses depended on the type of ozone exposure facility and increased in the following order: indoor growth chamber 3 than gymnosperms, as shifts in concentrations of carbohydrate and phenolics were observed in the former, but not in the latter. Elevated O3 had positive effects on some indices of insect performance: pupal mass increased and larval development time shortened, but these effects were counteracted by elevated CO2. Therefore, despite the observed increase in secondary metabolites, elevated O3 tends to increase tree foliage quality for herbivores, but elevated CO2 may alleviate these effects. Our meta‐analysis clearly demonstrated that effects of elevated O3 alone on leaf chemistry and some indices of insect performance differed from those of O3+CO2, and therefore, it is important to study effects of several factors of global climate change simultaneously.  相似文献

A genetic statistical method for estimation of intraspecific diversity of cultivated plants with respect to morphological genes is proposed. The method may be used for estimation of probability distributions of morphological (marker) mutations with respect to the frequencies of their expression and for prediction of experimental parameter such as the total number of markers, the scale (duration) of the experiment that is necessary for detection of a given proportion of the total marker diversity of the species, etc. The method was tested on tomato Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. using data from the SolGenes Internet databank.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The DNA sequences of a portion of the 5-enolpyruvyl shikimate phosphate synthase domain of the arom gene, encoding the pentafunctional AROM protein, were determined from isolates of Pneumocystis carinii from five mammalian host species (rat, human, ferret, rabbit and mouse). High levels of genetic divergence were found among P. carinii derived from different hosts species, 7–22% at the DNA sequence level, and 7–26% at the derived amino acid sequence level. Two separate and distinct sequences were isolated from infected ferret lungs. Low levels of divergence were seen in human-derived organisms.  相似文献

The major initial mechanism of speciation in subterranean blind mole rats, Spalacidae, is chromosomal, primarily through Robertsonian rearrangements. Here we highlight another scenario of chromosomal rearrangement leading to ecological speciation and adaptive radiation apparently initiated by pericentric inversions and genie divergence to different ecologies in mole rats in Jordan. We analysed karyotype, allozyme, size and ecological diversity across the range of mole rats in Jordan from mesic Irbid in the north to xeric Wadi Musa (Petra region) in the south, a transect of 250 km. We examined mole rats for chromosome ( N =71), size ( N =76), and allozyme ( N =67) diversities, encoded by 32 loci, in 12 populations of the Spalax ehrenbetgi superspecies in Jordan. By a combination of chromosome morphology, genetic distance, body size and ecogeography, we identified four new putative biological species. All species (except two animals in Madaba) share 2 n = 60 but vary in chromosome morphology, caused by pericentric inversions and/or centromeric shifts. The 'north Moav' species is karyotypically polymorphic for 2 n (2 n = 60; including locally also two animals with 2 n = 62). The distribution of the four species is associated with ecogeographical different domains and climatic diversity. Genetic diversity indices were low, but like chromosome arms (NFa) were positively correlated with aridity stress. Discriminant analysis correctly classified 91% of the individuals into the four species utilizing combinatorially chromosome, allozyme and size diversities. It is hypothesized that mole rat evolution underground is intimately associated with climatic diversity stress above ground.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate whether product label information “produced with organic ingredients” and “stabilization technology” affects consumer acceptability of vegetable soups. Three focus group interviews were preliminarily conducted in order to gain information about the appropriate terminology to use in the next consumer test. In all, 109 subjects were recruited by means of a background questionnaire. They were then divided into three groups according to age, gender and soup preference. Each group evaluated three different types of soup in two phases, first blind and then with information. At the end of the second phase, the participants filled in a conjoint analysis questionnaire. The results demonstrated that if consumers were informed that soup is prepared with organic ingredients, they would improve their acceptability scores, whatever the soup type. Stabilization technology information had no effect. Conjoint results revealed that consumers appreciate soups made with organic legumes and cereals and without seasoning. However, differences among subgroups were found.  相似文献
